Emmanual Lasker

World champion for 27 years !

 Won the world title in 1894 from W. Stienitz, the prize fund for the event was $4,000 dollars (that is $500,000 in todays money).  He lost his title in 1921 to J.R. Capablanca.He was born in Germany, but travelled the world playing chess.  In 1914 “Tsar Nicolas II of Russia” conferred the title of Grandmaster on Lasker.
